Although tales of mermaids have existed in legend for thousands of years, the mermaid regained popularity with the 1989 release of Disney's film, The Little Mermaid.
Costume Tips
The defining item in a mermaid costume is a stylized fish tail, which can be purchased or made at home. Mermaid costumes also often include a seashell bra and long, flowing hair (natural or wig). Accessories and embellishments include marine-themed jewelery and accents such as pearls, seashells and starfish.
