British student Meredith Kercher was staying in Italy when she was murdered in November 2007. Prosecutors allege that her roommate, American exchange student Amanda Knox, killed her together with two other men, because Kercher refused to participate in an orgy with them.BBC News: Kercher, man may face lone trial (September 16, 2008)

Murder
On November 1, 2007, between 10:30 and 11:30 p.m., Kercher was murdered. Reports indicated that her carotid artery had been cut and she had slowly bled to death.BBC: Profile: Meredith Kercher (October 29, 2008)At first, police believed that the killer or killers escaped through Kercher's bedroom window, since her bedroom door had been locked from the inside. However, suspicions were eventually cast on her flatmate Amanda Knox and two other men. Knox, along with Rafaelle Sollecito and Patrick Diya Lumumba were arrested in connection with the case. The judge presiding over the case believed that the murder may have been committed because Kercher refused to have sexual relations with Knox and her boyfriend.Times Online: Judge: Meredith killed for resisting violent sex
Investigation and Trials
Rudy Guede was found guilty of the murder in October 2008. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Prosecutors believe that Knox and Sollecito also took part in the murder and they are currently on trial. Knox initially said that she spent the night at Sollecito's apartment. She later changed her story and said she was in the kitchen and heard Kercher scream before she died. Knox reportedly changed her story because of police abuse and intimidation during the interrogations.First Post: Amanda Knox was ‘beaten by police’, says stepfather (March 20, 2009)Donkey Punch
