At first, police believed that the killer or killers escaped through Kercher's bedroom window, since her bedroom door had been locked from the inside. However, suspicions were eventually cast on her flatmate Amanda Knox and two other men. Knox, along with Rafaelle Sollecito and Patrick Diya Lumumba were arrested in connection with the case. The judge presiding over the case believed that the murder may have been committed because Kercher refused to have sexual relations with Knox and her boyfriend.Times Online: Judge: Meredith killed for resisting violent sex

Prosecutors believe that Knox and Sollecito also took part in the murder and they are currently on trial. Knox initially said that she spent the night at Sollecito's apartment. She later changed her story and said she was in the kitchen and heard Kercher scream before she died.
