The use of mercury in mascara and makeup products was banned by the state of Minnesota on January 1, 2008. Most companies have stopped the use of mercury in their mascara, however there is a small number of companies that still include it in their products. Minnesota was the first state to place a ban of this type on beauty products. Officials in the state are unaware of how many beauty products currently contain mercury and enforcement of the law will only happen if or when a consumer complains.
