Mental Math

  • Mental math is the ability to perform arithmetic calculations without the aid of external computing tools. The Trachtenberg System, abacus mental math and Vedic Mathematics utilize memorization and visualization abilities to develop mental math skills.

Many people use mental math every day without even realizing it. Calculating a tip, determining when to apply your brakes so you will not hit the car in front of you, and figuring out if you have enough time to finish all your errands while on your lunch break are all examples of using mental math.

  • Mental Math Example

By applying the formula (10% + 5% = 15%) anyone can use mental math to calculate a 15% tip.

    1. Multiply the final cost of the bill by 10% (.10)
    2. Divide the result by 2
    3. Add the first result and the second result together
