Menachem Begin

In 1977, Menachem Begin was elected the sixth Prime Minister of the State of Israel. He resigned in 1983 and withdrew from public life until his death in 1992.

1. May 17, 1977: The Likud party, led by Begin, wins election by a landslide
2. June 21, 1977: Assumes office of Prime Minister
3. 1979: Signs the Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty with Anwar Sadat
4. June 6, 1982: Begin Administration authorizes military invasion of Lebanon
5. October 10, 1983: Resigns from office
6. March 9, 1992: Dies in Tel Aviv, Israel

Begin's first major act was orchestrating a peace treaty with Egypt. He was met with both domestic and international criticism after authorized the invasion of Lebanon in 1983, and resigned from office that same year.

• 1948-1977: Under Begin, Herut formed the main opposition to the dominant Labor party in the Knesset

• September 17, 1978: Camp David Accords

• September, 1983: Begin steps down as prime minister due to failing health and depression

• March 9, 1992: Dies of heart failure in Tel Aviv
