In 1977, Menachem Begin was elected the sixth Prime Minister of the State of Israel. He resigned in 1983 and withdrew from public life until his death in 1992.

Rise and Fall

Begin's first major act was orchestrating a peace treaty with Egypt. He was met with both domestic and international criticism after authorized the invasion of Lebanon in 1983, and resigned from office that same year.

- August 16, 1913: Born in Brest, Russian Empire
- 1931: Enrolls in Warsaw University
- 1940: Arrested and sentenced for 8 years to the gulag camps
- 1942: Released from the Pechora labor camp under the Sikorski-Mayski Agreement
- 1944: Assumes the Irgun organization leadership
- 1948: Founds the right-wing political party Herut. Now known as Likud
- 1948-1977: Under Begin, Herut formed the main opposition to the dominant Labor party in the Knesset
