Memento is a psychological thriller film that chronicles the life of Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce) after a traumatic incident robs him of the ability to form new memories, a condition known as anterograde amnesia. Because Shelby can't remember anything that happens for more than a short period of time, the film is told mainly in brief, reverse-chronological chunks, ensuring the audience knows no more about what is going on than the main character.
Plot Summary
Shelby lost his ability to form new memories during an incident in which an intruder broke into his house. Shelby and his wife were attacked by the intruder, and his wife was raped and killed. Afterwards, he devoted his life to finding and killing the man who murdered his wife and took his memory. As an aid, Shelby keeps Polaroid photos with notes in his pockets at all times. He also has a number of tattoos across his body to remind himself of the basic facts of his mission.
