Early Life
Melvin Ely was born in Harvey, Illinois, on May 2, 1978. He attended high school at Thornton Township in Illinois. He continued his education at California State University, Fresno. In 2002, Ely was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers with the twelfth pick in the NBA draft.Basketball-Reference.com: Melvin ElyPro Career
In Ely's first season with the Clippers, he averaged 4.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in 52 games. In 2004, Ely was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats. He was traded again in 2007 to the San Antonio Spurs for Eric Williams and a draft pick.
