Mel White is a writer gay-rights activist and clergyman. He began his career as a writer for evangelist Jerry Falwell. When he came out as a homosexual, he and Falwall parted ways. White then started his own organization called Soulforce with his partner Gary Nixon.
Mel White is also the father of writer/actor Mike White. The two competed on the reality show The Amazing Race and finished in 6th place.

According to White's website, the goal of Soulforce is freedom for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people from religious and political oppression through the practice of relentless nonviolent resistance.Soulforce: Soulforce Vision Statement White has published two books about his life experiences, Stranger at the Gate: To be Gay and Christian in America and Religion Gone Bad: The Hidden Dangers of the Christian Right.
