Mel Brooks is an American writer, producer, actor, and humorist who grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He is one of the only artists to have won an Academy Award for film, a Grammy Award for music, an Emmy Award for television and a Tony Award for theater.
Brooks got his start doing stand up comedy and writing for television shows with the likes of Sid Ceasar and Carl Reiner. In 1965, he co-created the comedy show, Get Smart, which starred Don Adams and Barbara Feldon.
In 1968, Brooks wrote the comedy film, The Producers, which starred Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel as two dead-beat theater producers who scheme to make a lot of money by producing an epic flop of a show. The film earned Brooks an Oscar for best original screenplay. The Producers spawned an immensely successful Broadway adaption that starred Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, and the play in turn spawned a remake of the film in 2005.
In 1974, Brooks made Young Frankenstein which starred Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn and Peter Boyle. Then, in 1978, Brooks worked once again with starring Gene Wilder and Madeline Kahn in the comedy-western Blazing Saddles.
Brooks is also famous for his 1987 Star Wars spoof, Spaceballs.
