Phifer told press in March 2009, "People make mistakes—and while I don't condone what happened that night, you know, what Chris did to her—I remember being young, 19, and at that age it seemed like everything was so over-the-top, and everyone's so passionate about things at the age."Perez Hilton: Mekhi is a Moron (March 2, 2009)

- "I grew up in a single-parent house, but my mother was everything for me and my younger brother. She laid a foundation for us, and now she can sit back and reap the benefits of all of her hard work. She taught me to get out there and be the best I can be, and that’s the main reason why I work so hard, because she instilled that in me." — Mekhi Phifer on his childhood
- I'm putting that together, I'm very excited about it, ... I've already met with Al Green — shout-out to Al Green, much love to him. I've always been an avid, avid fan of Al Green, his music, his legacy, and just really wanted to portray it to the world." — Mekhi Phifer on Al Green
