Iranian citizen Mehdi Kazemi was studying in England when his boyfriend was executed for being gay. He applied for asylum, after hearing that the authorities had been to his parents' house with a warrant for his arrest. The magistrate denied his application for asylum, stating Iran did not "systematically" persecute homosexuals. Kazemi then fled England for the Netherlands, where he is currently in jail pending the outcome of a hearing to determine if he should be returned to England. European Union rules prohibit an individual from applying for asylum in more than one country.
