Megalosaurus is a genus of very large, carnivorous dinosaurs that lived during the middle Jurassic period, about 170 million years ago. Megalosaurus was up to 30 feet long, 10 feet tall, and weighed about 1 ton. Although equipped to hunt down prey, megalosaurs are believed to have primarily scavenged for food. It was the first dinosaur to be classified based on fossilized remains. Megalosaurus was the first dinosaur fossil discovered (in England in 1676). It was also the first dinosaur given a scientific name - by William Buckland in 1824.http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/dinosaurs/dinos/Megalosaurus.shtml
Megalosaurus walked on two legs, had a short neck, and a large head with serrated teeth. It had a massive tail, a very bulky body, toes with sharp claws, and heavy thick bones. Its arms were short and had hands with three fingers with sharp claws.http://www.kidsdinos.com/dinosaurs-for-children.php?dinosaur=Megalosaurus
Literally translated, Megalosaurus means "Great Lizard." It hunted down Stegosaurs, Iguanodon and Sauropods. It is also widely believed that the Megalosaurus was a scavenger. Considering the size of the Megalosaurus, it was a marvel how the dinosaur fed itself. Scavenging may have been its primary food source, where short arms were only necessary for putting the carrion (dead flesh) into its mouth, not so much for catching prey. Contrary to the claims made by a number of books dedicated to dinosaurs, no Megalosaurus fossils have been discovered in the continent of Africa.http://www.itsdinosaurs.com/11-megalosaurus.html

Scientific Treatment
Megalosaurus fossils were first found in an English quarry in 1676, but not officially examined until 1822. The description was formed on the basis of the unearthed bones of the Megalosaurus. The remains were incomplete, including only vertebrae, hip, hind leg, lower jaw, and dagger-like teeth from the dinosaur. http://www.itsdinosaurs.com/11-megalosaurus.html
