  • The Meat Puppets formed in 1980 in Arizona. Their mixture of punk rock, hard rock, and elements of country landed them a cult fan base and a deal with SST Records. Releasing several albums and touring throughout the '80s, the Meat Puppets became a staple of American underground music.
  • Commercial Success

Meat Puppets signed a major label deal in 1991 after a brief break up. Following a tour with Nirvana while they were at the peak of their fame (in addition to making an appearance on Nirvana's popular "Unplugged" performance, in which Kurt Cobain and the band played Meat Puppets songs "Plateau," "Oh, Me," and "Lake of Fire"), the Meat Puppets had their biggest commercial hit with the song "Backwater." Consequently, their 1994 album Too High to Die went gold.

The band broke up shortly after, and lead singer Curt Kirkwood eventually played under the Meat Puppets name with a new lineup instead of brother Cris Kirkwood (who had struggled with drugs) and drummer Derrick Bostrom. The original Puppets reunited in 2006, however, and released their first album together in more than a decade, Rise to Your Knees.
