McDonald's McRib is a sandwich made with a boneless pork patty shaped like ribs. It includes barbecue sauce, onions and pickles on a bun. The sandwich is one of McDonald's specialty products and is only available for short periods of time during promotional campaigns.
The McRib was first sold at McDonald's in 1981. Since then it has been pulled from the menu and only makes a return every so often for special promotions. It has not been available at all McDonald's location for many years. On November 2, 2010, the McRib will be back on the menu of every McDonald's for at least six weeks.http://popwatch.ew.com/2010/10/29/mcrib-is-back-colbert-report/
Legacy of McRib
Despite McRib's notoriety in modern fast food culture, it was not a success upon its introduction in the 1980s and was discontinued in 1985. McDonald's executives determined that pork is not eaten frequently enough in the United States to warrant permanent inclusion on the menu. It is, however, a permanent addition to the German McDonald's menu and is still on sale in areas of the midwest.
Pop Culture Moment
In Episode #303 of The Simpsons, Homer obsesses over a Krusty Burger sandwich called the "Ribwich," an obvious parody of the McRib. The McRib has a large fan base. Often when the McRib makes a return to the McDonald's menu, it will only be available in select locations. Because of this there is a web page to help fans of the pork sandwich find the nearest location it is available, called the McRib Locator.http://www.kleincast.com/maps/mcrib.php
