Maytag is a brand name of appliances produced by the Whirlpool Corporation. Maytag once was a stand-alone company, but was purchased by Whirlpool in 2006. The brand is famous for its commercials featuring repair men who are bored without any repair jobs to do.
In March 2009, Whirlpool announced the recall of 1.6 million Maytag refrigerators manufactured between 2001 and 2004. Both side-by-side and top freezer models were affected by the recall. The reason for the recall was a problem with the compressor relay that could cause overheating and pose a fire hazard.MSNBC: 1.6 million Maytag refrigerators recalled (March 10, 2009)
Background
Frederick Maytag arrived in Iowa at age 10 with his German parents in 1867. The family established a farmstead north of Newton, Iowa. Maytag first worked on the family farm until his mid-twenties, then he began to work for the the local farming implement company in Newton. He decided to begin his own company to help produce safer equipment and reduce farm-related injuries. It was during the slow winter months that he began to make the first Maytag washing machines, with wooden tubs, to supplement the sales.Vindy.com: Maytag closing means more ... (June 26, 2006)
