The Scandal
Beatty and Kilpatrick were both married when they had an affair in 2002. Kilpatrick was later sued by several police officers who said that their career were ruined because they were suspicious about Kilpatrick's personal life. Beatty and Kilpatrick both lied in court about the affair when they testified under oath in 2007. However, text messages on Kilpatrick's city-owned BlackBerry, which were eventually made available to the public in March 2009, confirmed that romantic and sexual text messages were exchanged. Kilpatrick was charged with perjury and obstruction of justice. In July, Kilpatrick was charged with misconduct in office after additional text messages to additional women were revealed.FOX News: Perjury, Obstruction Charges Brought Against Detroit Mayor (March 24, 2008) CNN: Detroit Mayor Accused of Lying About Affairs (July 23, 2008) Two felony charges were added on August 8 regards a July 24 incident where Kilpatrick allegedly assaulted two police officers.Detroit Free Press: Kilpatrick Will Not See Probation Officer (February 2, 2009)On September 4, 2008, Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to charges of obstruction of justice, conspiracy and perjury and resigned his office.
