In Russia, May 7 is celebrated as Radio Day, commemorating the work of inventor Alexander Popov. Throughout Eastern Europe, Popov is regarded as the inventor of radio, as opposed to the U.S. who celebrate NikolaTesla and Guglielmo Marconi as the inventors. On May 7, 1895, Popov gave the first demonstration of his radio to the Russian Physical and Chemical Society. Popov, a navy engineer, had developed a lightning detector, a radio receiver that was able to detect electromagnetic waves produced by lightning. Popov had been inspired by the work of Hertz in 1888, when he was able to successfully detect electromagnetic radiation. The first Radio Day was observed in 1945, 50 years after Popov had demonstrated his invention the the Physical and Chemical Society.
