May 3rd is Constitution Day in Poland. It is commemorated for the Constitution of May 3, 1791 that was adopted as a government act on that date by the parliament of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The constitution established to produce political equality between townspeople and nobility dissipating the worst ill-treatment of serfdom. This document is considered one of the first written European constitutions. The constitution only lasted one year as Poland was invaded, disbanded and divided between Russia, Prussia and Austria. In 1918, Poland reclaimed it’s country and May 3rd is still considered an important civic holiday.http://www.worldeventsguide.com/event/2811/Poland/Constitution-Day.html
