May 12 is celebrated worldwide as International Nurses Day. The day is meant to commemorate the many contributions nurses have made to medicine and society as a whole. International Nurses Day was first celebrated in 1965, as an unofficial celebration. Nearly 10 years later, the decision was made to move the day to May 12, the birth date of one of the most famous nurses in history, Florence Nightingale.
