  • Brief Biography

An only child born to a well-to-do family in Sweden in 1929, Sydow rose to stardom through his highly visible roles in many of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman's most acclaimed films. In perhaps his most legendary role, Sydow played a medieval knight who must play chess with Death in Bergman's haunting The Seventh Seal. After being cast as Jesus in The Greatest Story Every Told, Sydow became a sought-after Hollywood actor, although he was often subsequently (and paradoxically) typecast as a villain. In 1973, Sydow was nominated for two Golden Globes, both for Best Actor, for his roles in The Exorcist and Hawaii, and in 1987, he was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in Pelle the Conqueror. Sydow has also lampooned his villainous characters in such comedies as Strange Brew and Flash Gordon.
