Max Baucus is the Democratic senior United States Senator from Montana. Baucus was first elected to the Senate in 1978, succeeding Richard Shoup.
Baucus was born to a family of ranchers on December 11, 1941, in Helena, Montana. He attended Helena High School, where he graduated in 1959.http://baucus.senate.gov/?p=maxs_biography Upon his graduating, Baucus attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, before transferring to Stanford University a year later. He graduated in 1964, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. He worked as a lawyer on the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C., before returning to Montana to open his own law firm and serve as executive director of the state's Constitutional Convention.
