Maurice Smith

  • Maurice Smith, better known as "Big Mo," is a professional kick boxer, mixed martial artist, and a former UFC heavyweight champion. Smith was inspired by Bruce Lee after watching the movie Chinese Connection and decided to enter into martial arts at the age of 13. Smith enjoyed other sports but the one on one competition that martial arts offers is what attracted him the most to this sport. Over a five year course, Smith trained in Tae Kwon Do and Karate. In 1980 when Smith was 18, he competed in his first amateur kick boxing tournament. During his amateur stint he had a 7-0 record. 1983 marked Smith's first professional mixed martial arts fight for World Championship Title losing the seven round fight to Tony Morelli. Smith trained harder after that fight and had a victorious rematch against Morelli with a KO. Later Smith went on to win another title for World Kick boxing Association (WKA). Smith went ten straight years without a loss. Smith then took on mixed martial arts for a new challenge. In 1996, he was the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) World Heavyweight Champion. A year later he was the UFC heavy weight champion at UFC 15. In 2001, Smith was K-1 World GP2001 Primary USA Tournament winner. In 2007, Smith had his first mixed martial arts fight in almost seven years when he defeated Marco Ruas. Today Smith is the coach for the Seattle Tiger Sharks of the International Fight League.
