The Maui Invitational is a single elimination college basketball tournament held during the month of November. In 1982, then top-ranked Virginia was upset by NAIA school Chaminade. After the game, Virginia head coach Terry Holland suggested to Chaminade Athletic Director Mike Vasconcellos that they organize an annual tournament in Hawaii, and thus the Maui Invitational was born.
