    Actor, director, writer and producer Christopher Reeve gained international acclaim in four Superman films (from 1978 to 1987). The Juilliard-trained actor was paralyzed in a horseback riding accident in 1995. Refusing to accept that he would remain a quadriplegic for the rest of his life, he engaged in extensive physical therapy and was eventually able "to breathe without a ventilator for periods of time, take steps in a pool, regain his sense of smell and regain sensation in 70 percent of his body." Christopher Reeve and his wife, Dana established the Reeve Foundation as voice for others with spinal cord injuries and to support spinal cord research.   • Dana Reeve

    In August 2005, less than a year after Christopher Reeve's death, Dana Reeve announced she had lung cancer. A lifelong nonsmoker, she was an actress and singer but gained international recognition for the support and love she demonstrated toward her husband after he was paralyzed. She became the chairwoman of the Reeve Foundation after her husband's death.
