Matthew Haney, a student at Appalachian State University, has admitted that he fabricated the story about seeing a gunman, which led to the lockdown on March 3, 2008. Haney reportedly came home to find his door damaged, and afraid that he would be charged for it, filed a report with the rental agent about interrupting a burglary, and seeing a gunman. The police intend to charge him with a misdemeanor, filing a false police report.
