On August 1, 2007, Mattel initiated a series of recalls after acknowledging several safety concerns for toys manufactured in China. Over ten million toys were recalled for excessive lead content and dangerous design flaws deemed hazardous to children.
On December 15, 2008, the attorneys general of 40 American states settled with Mattel and Fisher-Price, Inc. Mattel must pay $12 million by January 30, 2009, to be divided by the participating states.Wichita Business Journal: Kansas, 39 other states settle with Mattel (December 15, 2008)
