Matt Wilhelm is a linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. He was born on February 2, 1981 in Oberlin, Ohio. Matt Wilhelm NFL Career
After being drafted by the Chargers in 2003, Wilhelm played primarily on special teams for his first 4 seasons. Making appearances in 41 games and starting none of them, he was a spot player at most. When he did make it onto the field as a linebacker, he recorded 5 passes defensed and 2 interceptions. In 2007 Wilhelm earned a spot on the starting linebacking core. He would record 97 tackles, 1 sack, and 3 interceptions that year. The next year he would start the first 7 games, but would his spot as a starter after that and play only sporadically the remainder of the year. He would finish with 51 tackles and 1 interception with no sacks. The Chargers let Wilhelm go after the 2008 season.
The 49ers signed Wilhelm after the season started, on October 19, 2009. Wilhelm immediately impressed coaches and was given special teams duty.
