The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also known as MIT, is an institution of higher learning. It is considered one of the United States' premiere learning institutions for math, science, and technology.
In April 23, 2009, MIT announced that the school would be ending eight of their athletic programs, including men's and women's hockey, men's and women's gymnastics, skiing, golf, pistol shooting and wrestling. Previous to this announcement, the institution had sponsored 41 sports, tying with Harvard for the most in the nation.FOXNews.com: Heavy MIT Highlight Financial Struggles at Colleges Nationwide

History
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology started in Boston, and very quickly outgrew its facilities. Over the first 50 years of its history, Harvard University made many attempts to merge MIT into its own technology program, in part to solve the facility problem. All of its propositions were rejected. The two schools still maintain a friendly rivalry today. MIT moved across the Charles River to Cambridge, MA in 1916, where it remains today. For nearly its entire history, the school has technically been coeducational; however, a strong female presence did not appear until 1963, when a women's dormitory was built. -
Culture
MIT has consistently invented in surprisingly innovative architecture, with buildings from the most legendary architects of the past century. Students are widely known for their intense focus on work, but also have a reputation for pulling impressive (but neither malicious nor destructive) pranks, known as "hacks". -
