In the House election on the same date, even as Republicans gained seats throughout the United States, Democrats won every election in Massachusetts. The winners were John Olver (beating out Republican Bill Gunn), Richard Neal (beating out Republican Tom Wesley), Barney Frank (who won over Sean Bielat), Mike Capuano (unopposed), Stephen Lynch (who beat out Republican Vernon Harrison), Niki Tsongas (beating Jon Golnik), John Tierney (who won against Bill Hudak), Ed Markey (beating Gerry Dembrowski), and Bill Keating (who beat Jeff Perry).http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2010/results/state/#MA
Seating Controversy
The Republican Party stated that if they were successful in the 2010 Special Election, they would attempt to seat candidate Scott Brown immediately. Senate rules require that newly-elected Senators be certified as winners by their home state before they can be sworn in, creating a possible loophole should Democrats attempt to contest the veracity of the results.http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/01/counting-the-days-will-kennedys-quick-seating-in-1962-repeat-itself.php?ref=mp The decision is made crucial because of the ongoing health care reform discussion going on concurrently in the US Senate, which could theoretically come to a vote before a replacement Senator can be seated from Massachusetts.http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/76879-mass-official-its-not-precedent-to-immediately-seat-winner
Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth spokesman Bill McNiff has said that Brown would not be seated immediately because this would break "precedent."http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/76879-mass-official-its-not-precedent-to-immediately-seat-winner
