OnMarch 9, 2009, 27-year-old Terry Joe Sedlacek was charged with the murder of Winters. Winters was severely injured when two churchgoers started wrestling with him and is in the hospital. Pastor Winters Killed
According to a Maryville police dispatcher, the gunman was first spotted standing outside the church before the 8:00 a.m. service. Pastor Winters spoke to the man, asking if he needed any help. Once the service began, the shooter walked up the aisle of the sanctuary, approached Winters and fired three shots. His weapon, a .45-caliber pistol, then jammed.
