Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds is a 2D fighting game released for the Xbox 360 and PS3 gaming consoles. It is the third release in the Marvel Vs. Capcom series, the last one being a decade earlier in 2000. The game features dozens of selectable characters from Marvel’s and Capcom’s rosters of characters, such as Spider-Man and Hulk from Marvel, and Dante and Zero from Capcom. First announced at Capcom's Captivate press show in Hawaii in April 2010, the game has actually been in development since 2008, when buoyed by overwhelming fan demand for a third release, Capcom fought for and successfully regained access to the Marvel comic properties.
The game features the same
hectic, frenetic fighting gameplay that has long been a hallmark of the Marvel
Vs. Capcom series. The game is very faithful
to the series’ history, faithfully recreating the original 2D movesets and
artwork for longtime series veterans such as Magneto and Storm, and even using
classic character themes such as Spider-Man’s theme from the original Marvel
Vs. Capcom. In addition to the faithful representation
of the original 2D artwork, several characters also have updated character designs
concurrent with their current appearances. For example, Iron Man and Thor more
closely resemble their current comic book and movie incarnations, while Jill
Valentine is dressed as she was in Resident Evil 5.
The game features the following returning Marvel characters: Spider-Man, Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Magneto, Storm, Sentinel, Dr. Doom, and Wolverine. New Marvel characters include She-Hulk, Deadpool, MODOK, Taskmaster, Dormammu, Phoenix, Super-Skrull, X-23, and Thor, almost all of which mark Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 as their first fighting game debut. Capcom’s character roster, meanwhile, includes Ryu, Chun-Li, Crimson Viper, and Akuma from the Street Fighter series, Viewtiful Joe from the Viewtiful Joe series, Amaterasu from the Okami series, Trish and Dante from the Devil May Cry series, Chris Redfield and Albert Wesker from the Resident Evil series, Morrigan, Hsien-Ko, and Felicia from Darkstalkers, Mike Hagger from Final Fight, Arthur from Ghost ‘N Goblins, and Tron Bonne and Zero from various Mega Man titles. Also available as future DLC characters are Jill Valentine from Resident Evil and Shuma-Gorath, an obscure Marvel villain and a Marvel Vs. Capcom series regular popular with the Capcom development teams.
