The Marvel Universe is the baseline setting for nearly all of the comic book stories published by Marvel Comics. Technically one of thousands of universes contained within the Multiverse, the Marvel Universe is designated Earth-616.
-
Super-Heroes
One of the core thematic elements of the Marvel Universe is the existence of individuals with physical and mental abilities beyond the range of the baseline for their species. Often these "powers" appear to break the known laws of physics as they are commonly understood. On Earth, these powers are the result of genetic tinkering on the human species by the Celestials, a godlike star-spanning race.Gods, Demons, and Cosmology
In the Marvel Universe, mythological pantheons co-exist. Families of gods from Greek and Norse mythology are represented, as well as analogues with the Judeo-Christian God and Devil. These entities often interfere with and manipulate the affairs of mortals. Supernatural characters from classic literature, such as Dracula and Frankenstein's monster, also exist in the Marvel Universe.Parallels With the Real World
Despite the many points where the Marvel Universe diverges from what is known about the real physical universe, many landmark events from the real world also happened there. World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and 9/11 are examples. With few exceptions, political leaders in the real world serve the same offices in the Marvel Universe.More Information
