Marty is a romantic drama film written by Paddy Chayefsky and directed by Delbert Mann. It is adapted from a play written by Chayefsky and was released on June 10, 1955. The movie stars Ernest Borgnine as Marty Pillett, a butcher from the Bronx, New York. Marty lives with his overprotective mother, played by Esther Minciotti. He meets and dates Clara, played by Betsy Blair , despite disapproval from his mother and friends. Marty won four Oscars at the 1956 Academy Awards.
Plot Synopsis
Marty tells the story of a Bronx, New York butcher named Marty, played by Ernest Borgnine. He lives with a smothering mother, played by Esther Minciotti. Lacking self confidence, Marty is persuaded to go to the Stardust Ballroom in Manhattan, where he meets Carla, played by Betsy Blair. Marty and Carla, whose lifestyle is very similar to his, get to be very fond of each other. But his friends and mother don't like her, so Marty doesn't call her back. The next evening Marty calls Carla, despite of what his friends and mother think of her. Frank Sutton, later to play Sergeant Carter on Gomer Pyle, USMC, plays Ralph.
