Martin Van Buren was the eighth President of the United States. Van Buren was the first President not born of British ancestry, and also the first to be born after the American Revolution.

Panic of 1837
Van Buren's presidency was marked by the depression known as the "Panic of 1837." During this time, hundreds of banks folded and unemployment reached record high, but Van Buren refused to allow the government to become involved with regulating United States banks. Largely due to being blamed for the Panic, he was not elected to a second term. -
