Martin Luther is credited with starting the Protestant Reformation of the 16th Century. The branch of Protestantism known as Lutheranism derives its name from him. Luther also held the unconventional and controversial belief that the Bible is not an infallible religious document.

1546: Dies in Eisleben, shortly after suffering a stroke
