Martin Lawrence's death was an internet and text message rumor that began on March 17, 2009. According to the rumor, Martin Lawrence was found dead in his apartment on the same day. In 1999, Lawrence suffered from heat exhaustion and collapsed while on a jog. He lapsed into a coma for three days and ultimately made a full recovery.

The comedy Death at a Funeral was a comedy about a family who comes to terms with their own dysfunction when a body disappears at its own funeral. The original movie was produced by Frank Oz and released in 2007. The 2009 Neil LeBute remake stars Lawrence, Tracy Morgan, Danny CGlover and Ron Glass. The contemporary film was written by Chris Rock and Ayesha Carr who also produce the film.
