Martin Gerber

Swiss professional hockey player Martin Gerber is a goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League.

On March 25, 2009, Gerber received a three-game suspension for abusing referee Mike Leggo. Gerber allegedly pushed Leggo and shot a puck in his direction in violation of NHL policy and earning an automatic suspension.CBSSports.com: Gerber Gets Three-game Suspension for Abusing Referee

Gerber was placed on waivers by the Senators on January 22, 2009. He cleared waivers and was picked up by the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 4, 2009. Gerber is expected to be the starting goaltender for the Leafs through the rest of the 2008-2009 season as their starter, Vesa Toskala, was placed on injured reserve.The Sports Network: Leafs Acquire Gerber Off Waivers

Gerber was drafted by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks during the 2001 NHL entry draft. He joined the Ducks for 22 games in the 2002-2003 season and posted a 1.95 goals against average during his rookie year. The next season he played 32 games with the Ducks and was then traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in the summer of 2004.

Gerber's skilled net minding led the Hurricanes to the 2006 Stanley Cup playoffs, but he faltered into the first round and backup goalie Cam Ward took over as starting goalie as the Hurricanes continued on to win the championships.

In the summer of 2006, Gerber signed as a free agent with the Ottawa Senators, where he would share the starting goalie role with Ray Emery for the next two seasons.

Gerber has competed in numerous international tournaments for his home country, including the 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005 World Championships, and the 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics.
