Goaltender Martin Biron was drafted 16th overall in the first round of the National Hockey League entry draft by the Buffalo Sabres in 1995. After letting in an average of more than five goals during his first two NHL games during the 1995-1996 season, he was sent back to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League to improve his goal tending skills.
NHL Career
In the 1999-2000 season, Biron was called back up to the NHL as Dominic Hasek's backup and played 41 games while Hasek was injured. Hasek was traded prior to the 2001-2002 season and Biron took over the starting role. He earned 31 wins during the season and remained a reliable starting goalie in Buffalo for the next three years.
The Sabres acquired Ryan Miller during the 2005-2006 season, relegating Biron to the role of backup goalie. During the off-season in summer of 2006, Biron requested that the Sabres trade him so that he could get more playing time. He got his wish in February of 2007 and went to play for the Philadelphia Flyers. One month later, the Flyers signed him to a two-year $7 million contract as their starting goalie.
