Mark Whitaker

Former Newsweek editor Mark Whitaker will replace the late Tim Russert as the Washington bureau chief for NBC News. He previously served as the Senior Vice President of NBC News, essentially second-in-command of NBC's news division. Whitaker will produce Russert's Sunday morning interview show, Meet the Press, which will be temporarily hosted by Tom Brokaw.

Whitaker joined Newsweek as a college intern in 1977, and later contributed as a reporter to the magazine's technology and business coverage.The New York Times: Newsweek Names Editor, And Promotes 2 Others (November 11, 1998) After overseeing the paper's coverage of the Monica Lewinsky scandal, Whitaker was made the magazine's lead editor in 1998. During Whitaker's tenure as editor, which lasted until 2006, the magazine won four National Magazine Awards.
