• Mark Twain grew up in rural Missouri during the time of slavery and worked as a typesetter at his brother's newspaper as a teenager. He left home at age 18 and did printer work throughout the east coast. While on a trip back home, Twain was persuaded to pursue a career as a steamboat captain. He was able to continue as a captain until the Civil War began and restrictions were places on travel along the Mississippi River. It was not until 1865 that he had his first work, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. From that point he rapidly gained popularity and continued publishing short stories and novels. Mark Twain remains one of America's most famous and celebrated authors and humorists, due in part to his pair of classic novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
