Democratic Senator Mark Pryor was sworn in as the junior senator for Arkansas in January of 2003 and easily won re-election in 2008. On August 1, 2008, Pryor joined the nine other members of the Gang of 10 in proposing a bill to reform the United States' energy policies. A bipartisan effort of the Republican and Democratic parties, the proposed legislation aims to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil by allowing for offshore drilling 50 miles from the coast of several eastern states. The proposed bill would also encourage the research and development of alternative energy technologies and reduce tax breaks for major oil corporations.
