  • Brief Biography

    A native of the Los Angeles area, Braves slugger Mark Kotsay won the 1995 Golden Spikes Award, an award given to the best amateur baseball player for his performance on the Cal State Fullerton baseball team. The promising young star was drafted by the Florida Marlins in 1996 and joined the team's outfield the following year. In his first full season in 1998, Kotsay posted strong numbers, but distinguished himself as one of the game's best defensive outfielders.MLB.com: Mark Kotsay

    In 2001, the Marlins traded Kotsay to the San Diego Padres, where he spent the next three seasons before being traded to the Oakland Athletics in 2004. In Oakland, Kotsay had his strongest year to date, finishing fourteenth in American League Most Valuable Player balloting, mainly for his excellent .314 batting average. In 2007, he was sidelined by back surgery and only played part of the season before being traded to the Braves on January 14, 2008.
