Everett was an international fugitive wanted by the FBI in connection with the 2004 beating death of his girlfriend, Stephanie Spears, in Hawthorne, California. Authorities believe he fled with his then three-year-old son Benjamin. Authorities were said to be searching for Everett's mother, Elizabeth Velasco. According to reports, 38-year-old Manuel Benitez, also known as Mark Everett, grabbed a child believed to be his son at a Chinese restaurant in El Monte, California, on December 23, 2008, and held the boy at gunpoint for about two hours. The hostage drama ended when police exchanged gunfire with Benitez. Authorities said the boy suffered a gunshot wound to the leg; Benitez was killed.
