Hockey Career
Bell was selected eighth overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1998 NHL entry draft. After winning a bronze medal with Team Canada at the 2000 World Junior Championships, Bell joined the Blackhawks for 13 games during the 2000-2001 season and was a full time member of their roster the following year.
After earning a career high of 48 points during the 2005-2006 season, Bell was traded to the San Jose Sharks, where he remained for one year. During the 2007 off season, he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, with whom he signed a three-year contract worth $6.5 million.
DUI Arrest
During the 2006 Labor Day weekend, Bell was arrested in San Jose for a hit and run while driving impaired. He pleaded no contest to the charges at an arraignment in early 2007 and was sentenced to serve six months in jail after the conclusion of the 2007-2008 hockey season. He was also placed in the NHL substance abuse program and suspended for the first 15 games of the season.
