Marion Barry is a Democratic politician from Washington DC, who served as the city's mayor twice. He currently serves as a city councilman. Barry was the target of a high-profile 1990 drug arrest after he was caught smoking crack cocaine on surveillance footage.

On May 5, 2009, Barry entered a yes vote on a proposal for Washington DC to recognize same-sex marriages from other states. After the motion passed with a unanimous 13-0 vote, Barry asked for the motion to be reconsidered, stating he did not understand what he was voting for. Barry was readmitted to Howard University Hospital on March 3, 2009, due to complications of his February 20, 2009, kidney transplant.
