In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, 16 characters from the Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog franchises compete in a series of athletic challenges. There are 20 different games total, spread out over eight different categories: archery, aquatics, fencing, table tennis, athletics, gymnastics, shooting and rowing. Certain events allow more than two players to play at once, such as the 4x100 relay, which will allow up to four players. In addition to the main tournament and circuit modes, there is also a single-player component: each playable characters has a series of six specific challenges. It is also possible to unlock special events called “Dream Events,” which take place in locales specific to the Mario and Sonic game worlds.
