The brothers find themselves traveling through time and they meet up with younger versions of themselves and the princess.
Gameplay
The game utilizes the dual screens. The top screen is the map of the area and the bottom screen. Players control both Mario and Luigi at the same time. Mario is controlled by A and Luigi is controlled by B while the baby Mario is controlled by X and baby Luigi is controlled by Y. The baby counterparts are able to go through crevices that the adult version otherwise couldn't access. When they separate the baby versions are shown on the top screen. Each set of brothers feature different abilities. The adult versions of Mario and Luigi have running and jumping abilities, and you are able to interlock the two to form a quickly moving ball or a propeller spin jump. The babies can only use hammers and use these to activate switches. You can also flatten the baby counterparts by rolling over them with the adult Mario and Luigi. This also lets them squeeze into tighter places or ride on gusts of wind. The game features many RPG elements such as leveling up. During combat, you control the four players. The babies can be used for additional stomp power. The attacks now are based on items you collect and you can create unique combinations of attacks. Some items can be used by a pair of siblings in battle and are enhanced when the babies are around. Other items will let you use all four brothers and perform super powerful attacks.
