While his office made up an excuse that he went hiking on the Appalachian Trail, Sanford later announced he had spent time with a mistress in Buenos Aires. Sanford's wife and children did not know where he was. On June 24, 2009, Sanford held a press conference admitting his infidelity to the public. He said he had an affair with the woman for about two years. Sanford has not named the woman, but newspaper has reported she is Maria Belen Shapur.
