Three Italians reached the semi-finals of the women's individual foil fencing competition. Granbassi, the winner of the Gold medal at the 2006 world championships was considered the favorite. In the semi-finals Granbassi faced fellow team member Maria Valentina Vezzali, but lost. In the bronze medal match she defeated teammate Giovanna Trillini.
